Videopoesia e Poesia Performativa

2019 — 2026

Hombres Videopoetry & Poetry Performance Award

2022 | I nuovi luoghi abbandonati

Il premio viene assegnato a The Harp of Vocal Cords, diretto dalla regista greca Alkistis Kafetzi.

·       Alessandra Prospero, poetessa, editrice e giornalista, con particolare attenzione alla scrittura e al testo poetico;

·       Roberto Bisegna, musicista e compositore, per la componente sonora e musicale;

·       Marco Di Gennaro, filmmaker, per la valutazione del linguaggio audiovisivo e cinematografico;

·       Ilio Leonio, componente del comitato organizzatore;

·       Enzo D'Urbano, fondatore e presidente del Premio Hombres Itinerante nelle prime edizioni;

·       Tiziano D'Urbano Basile, presidente del Premio Hombres Itinerante dal 2022;

Videopoetry & Poetry Performance

2019 — 2026

An international project of poetic and artistic research

Hombres Videopoetry & Poetry Performance Award

An International Project for Poetic and Artistic Research

The Premio Hombres Itinerante provides a dedicated platform for contemporary poetic experimentation through the International Videopoetry Award, established in 2019, and the new experimental Poetry Performance section, introduced in 2026.

Conceived and developed under the artistic direction of poet and performer Dimitri Ruggeri since its inception, the project explores the relationships between poetic language, moving images, sound, voice, the body, and performance practices.

Videopoetry is recognised as an autonomous artistic language in which poetic texts are not merely accompanied by images, but become part of an expressive construction based on the interaction of different media and codes. Poetry extends beyond the printed page, taking on audiovisual and intermedial forms.

A distinctive feature of the Award is its relationship with historic villages, the memory of places, and disused spaces. Its itinerant nature is therefore an integral part of the event's cultural identity: rather than simply moving from one venue to another, it seeks to connect artistic creation, local heritage, and communities.

Over the years, the project has developed a significant international dimension, encouraging the circulation of works and dialogue with initiatives such as Bologna in Lettere, Festival of Hope, and Versopolis Poetry Expo.

History of the Award (2019–2026)

2019 | The Beginnings: Poetry and Historic Villages

The first edition of the International Hombres Videopoetry Award concluded on 19 October 2019 in Carsoli, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy.

The initiative was established to promote videopoetry while highlighting the cultural significance of historic villages as places of memory and imagination.

From the outset, the project embraced an international outlook and an interdisciplinary approach, bringing cinematic language into dialogue with poetic writing and performance.

The inaugural edition recorded 1,371 entries, according to the figures reported by the organisers.

The main award went to The Funambulist Dream – Il sogno del funambolo, by Ines von Bonhorst and Yuri Pirondi, filmed in Civita di Bagnoregio and featuring tightrope walker Andrea Loreni.

The work came to embody the Award's artistic identity, bringing together landscape, poetry, music, gesture, and moving images.

The specialist jury included Alessandra Prospero, responsible for evaluating the poetic text; musician Roberto Bisegna, for the musical component; and filmmaker Marco Di Gennaro, for audiovisual evaluation, under the artistic direction of Dimitri Ruggeri.

The event took place during the presidency of Enzo D'Urbano, founder of the Premio Hombres Itinerante, with organisational support from Ilio Leonio.

2020 | The Shape of the City and International Expansion

The second edition, held on 26 September 2020 in Pereto, in the province of L'Aquila, explored the theme La forma della città (The Shape of the City).

The Award was presented to Eko ile, by Sheldon Chau, part of the City Odes – Lagos, Nigeria project.

The winning work marked an expansion of the Award's poetic exploration of space: from the historic village to the metropolis, and from the memory of small communities to the complexities of contemporary urban identity.

The jury comprised Dimitri Ruggeri, Alessandra Prospero, Roberto Bisegna, and Marco Di Gennaro, bringing together expertise in poetry, literature, music, and audiovisual production.

The International Online Festival During the Pandemic

The public health emergency also brought about a transformation in how the works were presented and distributed.

From 8 to 10 December 2020, the International Hombres Videopoetry Festival took place online through the Slam[Contem]Poetry YouTube channel, under the artistic direction of Dimitri Ruggeri.

The programme featured a selection of works from the 2020 edition, including award-winning videopoems, and experimented with the format of digital premieres.

Alongside the screenings, the Festival presented Extra Poetry Performance, a programme featuring seven poets from Croatia, Italy, Nigeria, Greece, Lithuania, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic.

This experience represents an important moment in the event's history, documenting an early interest in the oral, sonic, and embodied dimensions of poetry.

From an artistic perspective, it anticipated the development of Poetry Performance, formally introduced as a new competitive section in 2026.

The First International Collaborations

Also in 2020, a selection of works associated with the Hombres project was presented as part of Festival of Hope, organised by the European poetry platform Versopolis.

A further opportunity for wider exposure came through Bologna in Lettere, which hosted a selection of videopoems from the inaugural edition.

Curatorial activities thus extended beyond the award ceremony itself, strengthening the international circulation of the works.

2021 | Project Continuity and New Cultural Connections

The year 2021 fell within a period of reorganisation for cultural activities following the disruption caused by the pandemic.

Dialogue with the Versopolis platform continued through Festival of Hope 2021 – Rumorvoices, an initiative involving Pierre Kornev, Hélène Matte, and Dimitri Ruggeri.

The project explored relationships between voice, language, and contemporary artistic practices, continuing the lines of research developed within the wider context of the Award.

In September of the same year, the call for entries for the 17th Premio Hombres Itinerante Videopoetry Award was published, with the subsequent competitive phase scheduled for 2022.

The year therefore represented a period of project continuity, curatorial activity, and preparation for the next edition.

2022 | The New Abandoned Places

On 24 September 2022, the Award returned to Pereto, in the province of L'Aquila, with the theme I nuovi luoghi abbandonati (The New Abandoned Places).

The idea of abandonment was explored not only in geographical terms, but also through existential and symbolic dimensions.

The winning work was Dynamite, by French artist Jim Vieille, distinguished by an intense relationship between voice, gesture, expressive tension, and audiovisual language.

The jury comprised Tiziano D'Urbano Basile, President of the Premio Hombres Itinerante; Dimitri Ruggeri, Artistic Director, poet, and performer; Marco Di Gennaro, filmmaker; Alessandra Prospero, poet, publisher, and journalist; Roberto Bisegna, musician; and Ilio Leonio, member of the organising committee.

This edition also marked the transition to the presidency of Tiziano D'Urbano Basile, ensuring continuity with the cultural project founded by Enzo D'Urbano, who had passed away prematurely.

2023 | Audiovisual Poetry and Social Engagement

On 28 October 2023, the Award took place in Alatri, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio.

The jury selected the competing works from 78 submissions, with ten countries represented in the final.

The main award was presented to Dear Mahsa, by Martin Pflanzer, based on a poem by Ayeda Alavie.

The work addresses the story of Mahsa Jina Amini and the condition of women in Iran, transforming remembrance and protest into an audiovisual poetic narrative.

The selection highlights videopoetry's ability to engage with civic issues, human rights, identity, and contemporary conflicts.

The jury retained the same composition as in 2022: Tiziano D'Urbano, Dimitri Ruggeri, Marco Di Gennaro, Alessandra Prospero, Roberto Bisegna, and Ilio Leonio.

2024 | Language, Voice, and the Body

The final ceremony took place on 26 October 2024 in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Abruzzo, with works submitted from twenty-one countries.

The Award went to The Harp of Vocal Cords, directed by Greek filmmaker Alkistis Kafetzi.

The work explores female emancipation through the interaction of poetic language, musical experimentation, voice, and imagery.

The section reaffirmed its openness to hybrid artistic languages and creative research involving dance, visual arts, performance, and audiovisual expression.

The jury comprised Tiziano D'Urbano, Dimitri Ruggeri, Alessandra Prospero, Roberto Bisegna, and Ilio Leonio.

2025 | Poetry, Ecology, and Memory

The 20th edition of the Premio Hombres Itinerante concluded its Videopoetry section on 1 November 2025 at the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Pereto.

The winning work was Late on the Planet, from Brazil, which intertwines the relationship between a mother and her child with a reflection on the fragility of the planet.

The Award reflects the event's interest in works that combine formal artistic research with ethical, environmental, and existential concerns.

The jury comprised Tiziano D'Urbano, President of the Award; Dimitri Ruggeri, Artistic Director; Roberto Bisegna, musician; and Ilio Leonio, member of the organising committee.

The special mentions highlighted the geographical diversity of the submitted works, with contributions from Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

2026 | VideoPolis and the New Poetry Performance Section

In February 2026, the project was featured at Versopolis Poetry Expo through VideoPolis, an international videopoetry programme curated by Dimitri Ruggeri and developed from works presented at the 2025 Hombres Award.

VideoPolis offered a further opportunity for audiovisual poetic works to reach international audiences, placing them in dialogue with a broader cultural context dedicated to the transformations of contemporary poetry.

In the same year, on the occasion of the 21st edition of the Premio Hombres Itinerante, a new experimental Poetry Performance section was introduced.

The project builds upon an interest already present in previous artistic and curatorial activities, particularly the Extra Poetry Performance programme presented in 2020.

The new section focuses on practices in which poetic language is realised through interpretation, voice, gesture, the body, and stage presence.

The closing ceremony of the 21st edition is scheduled for 24 October 2026 at the Palazzetto dei Nobili in L'Aquila.

The event will also include the presentation of the 2026 Arte e Umanità Lifetime Achievement Award to Giovanni Fontana.

The Juries: Continuity and Interdisciplinary Expertise

Since its establishment, the Hombres Videopoetry Award has entrusted the evaluation of works to figures representing different fields of culture and artistic production.

The combination of poetic, literary, musical, and audiovisual expertise reflects the nature of videopoetry as an artistic language built upon the interaction of words, images, sound, and performance.

The artistic direction of Dimitri Ruggeri, in place since 2019, has provided continuity throughout the project's development.

Over the years, the following figures have contributed to the work of the juries:

·       Alessandra Prospero, poet, publisher, and journalist, with particular expertise in poetic writing and literary texts;

·       Roberto Bisegna, musician and composer, contributing expertise in music and sound;

·       Marco Di Gennaro, filmmaker, specialising in audiovisual and cinematic language;

·       Ilio Leonio, member of the organising committee;

·       Enzo D'Urbano, founder and President of the Premio Hombres Itinerante during its earlier editions;

·       Tiziano D'Urbano Basile, President of the Premio Hombres Itinerante since 2022;

·       Dimitri Ruggeri, poet, videopoet, performer, and Artistic Director of the section.

The changing composition of the juries reflects the consolidation of an evaluation approach in which poetic quality, originality of artistic research, visual construction, interpretation, and sonic experimentation contribute to the overall assessment of each work.

International Collaborations and Projects

Versopolis – Festival of Hope (2020)

The collaboration with Festival of Hope contributed to the international circulation of videopoetry and the development of new ways of presenting works through digital platforms.

Bologna in Lettere (2020)

The presentation of a selection of Hombres works at Bologna in Lettere encouraged dialogue between videopoetry and other forms of contemporary poetic experimentation.

International Hombres Online Videopoetry Festival (2020)

Held from 8 to 10 December 2020, the Festival presented a selection of audiovisual works alongside Extra Poetry Performance, anticipating some of the artistic interests developed in subsequent years.

Versopolis – Festival of Hope: Rumorvoices (2021)

The initiative strengthened the dialogue between the poetic research promoted by Slam[Contem]Poetry and a European network dedicated to artistic and literary experimentation.

Versopolis Poetry Expo – VideoPolis (2026)

VideoPolis, curated by Dimitri Ruggeri, presented a selection of videopoems from the 2025 Hombres edition, helping to promote the Award within an international context dedicated to contemporary poetry.

Poetry Performance: The New Experimental Section

Established in 2026, the Poetry Performance section represents an expansion of the artistic research promoted by the Premio Hombres Itinerante.

The section is dedicated to poetic forms in which voice, the body, gesture, and interpretation become constitutive elements of the work.

Its scope encompasses a variety of oral and stage-based poetic practices, from spoken word poetry and poetry performance to poetry slam and experiments combining language, music, and theatre.

Poetry Performance recognises the act of performing as an autonomous form of artistic creation, in which the poetic text is transformed through the presence and interpretation of the performer.

The introduction of this section is conceptually linked to Extra Poetry Performance, presented during the International Hombres Online Festival in December 2020, and to the broader artistic research developed under the project's direction.

The new section reflects the Premio Hombres Itinerante's commitment to exploring the boundaries of contemporary poetry and its transformations through encounters between different artistic languages and practices.

Artistic Direction

Dimitri Ruggeri

A poet, performer, and cultural promoter, Dimitri Ruggeri has directed the international Videopoetry section of the Premio Hombres Itinerante since 2019.

His artistic and curatorial activities encompass contemporary poetry, intermedial experimentation, performance, and cultural initiatives.

Through the Slam[Contem]Poetry project and collaborations with national and international organisations, he has contributed to the circulation of audiovisual poetic works and fostered opportunities for exchange among poets and artists from different cultural backgrounds.

Since 2026, his artistic direction has also included the new experimental Poetry Performance section.

An Evolving Field of Artistic Research

From its inaugural edition in 2019 to the introduction of Poetry Performance in 2026, the Hombres Award has developed a programme that brings together artistic experimentation, international dialogue, and the cultural significance of places.

Historic villages, cities, disused spaces, and digital platforms have become different settings for a shared exploration: that of poetic language capable of crossing the boundaries between artistic media and forms of expression.

The history of award-winning works, juries, collaborations, and artistic initiatives documents an evolving project in which poetry takes shape as an audiovisual, sonic, embodied, and collective experience.
